Pentecost is coming (Part 4)

0

Sunday 27th May is Pentecost Sunday when (some of) the church around the world celebrate the breathtakingly amazing day when God poured out, giving as a gift to all believers, the Holy Spirit of God. Each day for the next ten days, up to and including May 27th, I shall post a quote about the Holy Spirit and would encourage you to use it as a prayerful meditation, inviting Holy Spirit to come and flow in and through you.

“The spirit of bondage works by fear for the slave fears the rod: but love cries, Abba, Father; it disposes us to go to God, and behave ourselves towards God as children; and it gives us clear evidence of our union to God as His children, and so casts out fear. So that it appears that the witness of the Spirit the apostle speaks of, is far from being any whisper, or immediate suggestion or revelation; but that gracious holy effect of the Spirit of God in the hearts of the saints, the disposition and temper of children, appearing in sweet childlike love to God, which casts out fear or a spirit of a slave.”

Jonathan Edwards

“The Holy Spirit doesn’t need to equip you for what you’re not going to do, so if you’re in rebellion against Jesus and refusing His right to be Lord, He doesn’t need to send the Holy Spirit to equip you for service. And, tragically, you miss out on the joy that He brings. So let the Holy Spirit deal with anything that’s keeping you from obeying Christ.”

Henry Blackaby

Lord, I give up all my own plans and purposes, all my own desires and hopes, and accept Thy will for my life. I give myself, my life, my all utterly to Thee to be Thine forever. Fill me and seal me with Thy Holy Spirit. Use me as Thou wilt. Send me where Thou wilt. Work out Thy whole will in my life at any cost, now and forever.

A boy who wouldn’t be bored

There was so much to admire in this short film about a young boy who doesn’t give in to boredom. Watch it and love it! Then ask if, with the Spirit of the Living God inside of you, you can be more creative and energetic in your life?

What the Church needs to-day is not more machinery or better, not new organizations or more and novel methods, but men whom the Holy Ghost can use men of prayer, men mighty in prayer. The Holy Ghost does not flow through methods, but through men. He does not come on machinery, but on men. He does not anoint plans, but men, men of prayer.

Holy Spirit of God, visit now this soul of mine, and tarry within it until the eventide. Inspire all my thoughts. Pervade all my imaginations. Suggest all my decisions. Lodge in my soul’s most inward citadel, and order all my doings. Be with me in silence and in my speech, in my haste and in my leisure, in company and in solitude, in the freshness of the morning and the weariness of the evening. Give me grace at all times to rejoice in Thy mysterious companionship.

John Baillie

But have we Holy Spirit power – power that restricts the devil’s power, pulls down strongholds and obtains promises? Daring delinquents will be damned if they are not delivered from the devil’s dominion. What has hell to fear other than a God-anointed, prayer-powered church?

Coffee with Jesus cartoons

I love cartoons and so was interested to stumble across “Coffee with Jesus“. I have a feeling some will make it into some of them will make it into theology classes, and I should say i don’t agree with, or even like, many of them. But some made me laugh out loud. Here’s a selection.

Thirsty for the Holy Spirit

0

As part of my build up to Pentecost I am thinking and praying about the activity of the Holy Spirit in my life – it is a beautiful challenge to my heart and spirit, but one that is well worthwhile as I want to be ready for anything the Lord choses to do.

This is an adapted version of a presentation I used in speaking to a church about the Holy Spirit. My focus was to ask about their (my) thirst, to ask if I was dehydrated without even realising it.

Thinking ethically

0

Assuming I return to LTCi to teach next semester (I am not certain about that at the moment) I will probably teach a second year class on ethics. I love being on the “right side of the desk” in classes like this – that is, I like asking the questions and throwing in all sorts of red herrings. There are many issues which need Christians to think clearly and graciously about (putting it simply ethics is about the process of thinking and developing your reasoning, morality is what you think is right and wrong) – I hope I help start my students on that path. Which brings me to these photos. What do you think?
